I am so privileged to be working with a team of young people who works with me in a Primary School with kids who truly need love and role models. We call ourselves J2911 and we operate with the motto that "I have a purpose". Our goal is to influence a generation of young people, teaching them values and morals, good self-esteem and being the role models they need to look up to in this time. Some of these kids come from really troubled communities such as Hanover Park and Gugulethu. They come with stories of poverty, community drug exposure and gangsterism.
I must say that working with these kids has not been the easiest for myself and the team, however we have found it worth it to try to be a light in their darkness.
We work within this particular school on a Tuesday and a Thursday, and our team consists out of 6 people. We work very close to the principle, some staff and the school counsellor. Today went really well as we retouched on our previous lessons in the previous sessions (RIGHTS, RESPONSIBILITY and ACOUNTABILITY) We are currently dealing with kids who seemingly appear too much for the school environment, however we have noticed that they only need two things. Love and Role Models. It is not that they do not receive love from their homes or school environment, but they need the time to talk to someone and experience love within a comfortable yet an environment where they can grow in all aspects of life.
My question to us who has a lot to say and does nothing about the state of the immediate community, why have you not shone your light yet?
There are many sons and daughters at the ages of an average of 10 that are exposed to drugs and to sex. They end up growing up to be like the drug lord on the corner and the one who rapes his own blood sister. Our problem has become the very thing we turned a blind eye to. There is an entire generation of young children and young people who are going astray because there was someone who failed to shine a light in the darkness of sin.
What are we really waiting for?
Why are we so comfortable to find the next door neighbour's daughter drowning in her own blood? Why are we so numb to the fact that our sons are roaming the streets at 3am because they high on some sort of substance?
We cannot say that we have not been unctioned to go out and be the light and salt of the earth, because this is God the Father's heartbeat. It is for people.
The school team consists of full time working staff, entrepreneurs and a young man who is about to study soon. We do not get paid extra for this work within the school, however this has become our pleasure and our delight to be of some sort of influence.
In this blog, I would also like to say thank you to these young people who endlessly take out time to invest into the younger ones who are still in school. Thank you to those adults from The River Church, Kenwyn who stand behind us and supports us in more ways than one.
My challenge to you who reads this blog today is more than just simple words of exhortation. It is a cry, it is the cry of my generation. Some of you are sitting with the wisdom to deliver someone out of their chains, but you withhold the key because of fear and there are some who has the influence to turn around cities, but you are caught up in your own struggles and strife.
Let's arise with the fire in our eyes. Whether we are speaking to one or to a thousand at a time, let this light shine!
J2911
