I was so honoured this week when I met a young gentleman who had read some of my blog posts about identity before. He was so excited to ask me questions about my journey of self discovery both psychologically and spiritually in Jesus. As we were speaking, I had soon come to realise that I was looking at a picture of myself a few years ago standing in front of me. We had talked about the moulds that society and mankind has placed others in and how that has robbed us of our true selves.
It is such an injustice when we find ourselves in a deep place of comparison. This then leads to insecurities that only develops to govern our lives to a point where we later become unaware that we are no longer in full control.
Believe it or not, but in the population of about 7 billion people on our planet, there is a place for you. If one were to leave this earth prematurely then there would be a void because you fill a place - even when you do not feel like it.
It is easy to look through the lens of brokeness only desiring to be like the one next to you. If we were honest with ourselves, we would actually see that we are not attracted to the person according to their personality, instead we are attracted to the confidence they portray. I always find myself wanting to be like.. but I continually have to shift my focus on who the true Rowyn is. Psychologically we can classify people into 4 groups of temperaments and 16 families of personality. However, intricately we are very unique in our diversity. There has never been anyone like you and there will never be anyone like you.
This is the beauty of creation. The Psalmist says in Psalm 139:13 that God formed our inward parts. He goes on to say that we were made fearfully and wonderfully. God did not create us corporately, but individually and with intense focus. He took delight, He took pleasure in the beauty of the process of creation.
I am here today to encourage every teenager who is reading this post, an even to the adults who has not found themselves yet. The first point I would like to make is that you can search all over to find yourselves. You can turn to drugs, alcohol, sex, experimenting everything in between but you can only find your true self in the One who created you. How can we live a life if we do not know what the One who created us thinks and says about us? Secondly, society will always have something to say, people will always have an opinion. Now for some it is easy not to conform to what people say we should look, act or love like - but consciously we have to decide this is who I am and this is who I will be.
Some of us have been caught up in prisons set by men around us. We have been bound by what that kid said about us in Primary School and it has kept us secluded from being true to ourselves. It is time to break out of the prisons we find ourselves in and start a journey of CELEBRATING YOU.
How do I start this journey?
We need to start somewhere right? Or else how would we grow?
I would encourage you to buy yourself a bible. I always view the bible like a love letter where our Heavenly Father writes about everything we need pertaining to this life, especially about who we are in Him.
Once we understand and grip His view about us, we then need no other opinion to shake us.
Secondly, start surrounding yourself with people who see the potential in you and who can celebrate you in both your darkness and light. These people will have a voice that can shape your path on this journey, making it easier to the road of discovery.
Identity is one of the root problems in our world today. We do not know our true selves. What would the world look like if everyone celebrated themselves in full understanding of who they are?
There is a love letter waiting for you. If you do not open it, you will not know the beauty on the inside
