Today during prayer assembly at school, my colleague and I, were facilitating a group discussion with the boys from Grade 7 to 12. We were talking about all stuff 'boys' - you know - SEX, women and everything in between. To my surprise this session was pretty liberating, because usually these talks always end up more awkward than what was intended.
I glanced across to my colleague every now and then seeking for advice or insight on certain questions and statements I could not explain in depth. He confidently just was himself, answering in boldness and liberty about the 'need to know' questions burning in young men's hearts.
I then looked across the room at all the young gentlemen and I saw something of what could be.
What if we sat down at each others feet learning about how we can respect women, how we can serve each other and how we can put our hormones to rest whenever they dominantly peep their heads out? What if we had sincerely honoured every one we encountered higher than ourselves because we simply love them?
I looked at Jason (my colleague) and I saw Jesus in Him. I saw something of what looked like a picture of what could be if young men should come together and change the tide of self-esteem, what love should look like to the opposite sex and what loving God looks like.
For too long we have blamed the men of the previous generation for the faults they made - when the power lies in our very own hands to change the image of "man". We know many of these men in our communities have neglected to stand with their families, with their sons and their daughters. However, if we could come together and pray seeking for God to bring unity amongst us we can do so much more.
Yes we are broken. Yes we have tried filling the void. But we have a brother in Jesus first of all. One brother who would never ever fail us. He has set the perfect example of what love looks like to both men and women. We read in the account of John 13 that Jesus went low to wash His disciples feet setting an example of how we should honour one another in both this way and in life. Who better to look up to to take on these positive attributes than the faithful brother Himself?
Secondly, we have many brothers in the kingdom. Some you might find along the journey of life, some who are truly pure in all their living. Then you have found a precious thing. Many are struggling with things such as purity and hypocrisy, but let us get to that place where we can be open to each other in total honesty, then correcting one another in love and then lift each other in prayer till we are strengthened.
We could raise up an army in God's kingdom, an army that changes the tides of society.
Let us join hands with one another and embrace one another's differences. Let us ask the Lord to give us eyes as He sees His very own. We would love better with His heart and His eyes.
It is also time that the men in this generation rise up. Stand firm on your feet and get rid of the things that make you stumble. For there are families, communities, cities and nations waiting for you to stand up and be a true son to your Father. For there is power in sonship.
We are stronger together than we are alone.
