I was sitting in the taxi today, coming from Wynberg, and I heard a gentleman speak about the sore topic of the killing of the late 13 year old girl, Rene Roman. I knew that I needed to write about this story, not because of what was said, but because of what still needs to be said and done.
Rene was brutally murdered a few days ago in a neighbouring area many of us are familiar to called Lavender Hill in Cape Town, South Africa. I do believe that this is a very sad and traumatic time for both the family and community of Rene. Some might have known her and others might have not.
However, her blood speaks in the streets of Cape Town and not only does her blood speak, but the blood of many other innocent people.I ask myself this question, what does it benefit us as a community when we kill our very own brothers and sisters? Are we then not losing out because we might have killed the next Nelson Mandela that will soon deliver us out of our bondage as a nation?
This is a very serious topic as many lives are taken through gangsterism, abuse and other forms of lawlessness. There is no bigger injustice than to take the life of another human being.
We have reached the point of continual headlines that made us so desensitised to the rebelion within our human hearts. It has become familiar for us to read that another man has killed his family, another young man has been found in his own blood and how a young girl has been abducted and raped and when this is over and done with, often brutally murdered. This has become our reality, this has become our song.
I am sorry to say, but this is what is so dominant in our "coloured" communities. We have grown onto the fear of our own culture, the culture of "taking away from another". It is something that needs to be broken and dealt with. With boldness I say, that it is only through the power of God through His Son Jesus Christ that our communities can be transformed and not just changed. It must be a complete shift, so that when our children has grown up they will only speak of when Hanover Park was still so violent many years ago, but now the community is known for being a light to the city.
The question to all believers and churches within such communities are:
"Why have you not demonstrated the power of your God through prayer and evangelism?"
What will it take for us to wake up to the very real truth that stands at our doorstep? We cannot keep fighting amongst each other while the blood of our nation cries out aloud in the streets! Many are waiting to be avenged and fought for, as many are taken out by the spirit of lawlessness.
It is now more than ever that our eyes need to be opened as the body of Christ, to stand in unity reaching out in prayer and evangelism. It is in the pure unity that crosses over boundaries of backgrounds, denominantions and politics that will save our nation.
God wants to do something new and He is preparing His own sons and daughters to finally take dominion in this city and nation. There is a call today, there is a cry today. There is a call that those who will fight for social justice will arise and not be ashamed. There is a cry for vengeance of those who have shed innocent blood in our own streets.
Lets stand up and fight in both the spirit and the natural. My heart breaks when I hear that our sons and daughters are being robbed of their precious lives and such great potential. We need to step up. Each and every one of us. The rich and the poor.
