As the third school term ends, things become really busy and stressful. It is one of those moments when you think to yourself that the hours in the day is just not enough. So yesterday was one of the last few days at school and I knew I had to rush after school to get to Town by 5:15pm to sing in a synagogue for a concert that would bring Jews and Gentiles together in the feast of tabernacles (suchot), but what I didn't know was that my life would not be the same again.
I changed into the formal clothes packed in my bag and rushed off to jump onto the next train from Wynberg to Cape Town. Not knowing where the synagogue was I used the amazing Google Maps app and ran wildly through town, after grabbing a cup of tea by Mc Donalds of course!
As I was approaching the synagogue (Shul) I was not quite sure what I could expect, but I was excited anyhow! I just arrived at the synagogue and security was hectic. Not sure where the synagogue was, I had asked the security where I could find the synagogue and he said, "It is right in front of you". After passing the first set of security, I had entered the court yard where treats had been sold and people were walking up and down. I had to pass another security with the security asking questions to prove my identity. Wow the atmosphere was awesome. You could tell people were excited, especially because they came an hour and few minutes before the show could begin.
I passed through under a tent and on the left I saw a transparent room where jewish men stood in rows behind chairs where they were praying from books they had in their hands. That was beautiful to see. I got to the synagogue and I got a kippa by the wonderful ladies at the door. As I entered I just went wow in my heart. The Shul was beautiful! It was big, had two levels of seating with a stage in front. Chandeliers were hanging from the ceiling with glass stained windows in the walls on each side. After booking in with Erez I sat down to relax and warm up my voice while I wait for Ian and Juan. The sound team was all around and the artists and guests were filling up the place.
The kippa I got at the door did not fit my head, as it kept falling because of my hair. Eventually when Ian arrived, he brought a kippa for me that Juan lent us, and that fitted perfectly. We were mesmerised by a young man who played keyboard and then the concert started! Erez introduced everyone and the rabbi blessed the rest of the evening after Erez had opened up. Everyone was so nice.
Many people had performed, most sang and played to beautiful hebrew songs and the people joined in. As I glanced across the crowd, I had seen this lady from WIZO and she had tears in her eyes all through the evening. I was so moved. I could also see some people not sure what to expect as there were two kinds of people in the room. I got to witness Zamar live and wow! I have no words. Zamar has such a beautiful stage presence and they touched a lot of hearts in the room. One of their musical pieces really got the vibe going in the room and Zamar received a standing ovation.
Liz had hit the stage to speak about the scarlet chord of Rahab the prostitute in three pieces. Liz and Jamie is such an amazing couple, both of them respected in both the Jewish and Christian communities. Juan had finally arrived and he came with his beautiful violin. As the show progressed, I kept humming the song we had prepared (which was a surprise for the Jews in the room). I kept humming in the wrong key and he would pluck his violin and I would ask if that was the key and he would laugh. The annointing of HaShem was in the room. I was so in awe as I knew that God's chosen people were in our midst and they are indeed beautiful.
Our performance had been moved to be the second last item of the show. By this time my heart started beating as I would glance over to watch Erez que the next act. Liz went onto stage to speak about the times we are in and she touched and moved my heart and soul. She repented on behalf of the church for their lack of support and division toward the Jews. She honoured every Jew and made a declaration that they are not alone in this time. That we as gentiles (Christians) would come along side them and be like a Rahab, even if we should hide them if need to be, but we will not be silent. After this a Jewish representative from WIZO had spoken on behalf of the Jews. She had thanked everyone and she invited us to come to the synagogue any time they had events, which was an honour. Next a Christian zionist had spoken on behalf of the gentiles. Then after that a representative from the ACDP had spoken from a political point of view. Jamie had come up to honour the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and he honoured his wife Elizabeth in front of all the witnesses. She got so teary and smiled in response to his love and appreciation for who she is and what she is doing.
It was finally our time. By this time my lift had been waiting outside and I felt a little uneasy. As we walked onto stage, Erez had asked all the people to stand as they would know why when we started singing. Everyone stood and wondered why. The lights were dim and all I thought was how beautiful this moment was and that I need to make eye contact with the people at least. Juan started playing two bars of the song and the whole auditorium got emotional and started singing along. I could listen to them all night I thought. Ian and I started singing the anthem of Israel known as the Hatikva and everyone joined in. This moment was so holy and the Jews in the room sang with all their hearts. I got so emotional as I thought that Yeshua had made these people glad. That the Jewish spirit had been in the room and been appreciated.
We walked off stage and it seemed like the party had just started. They were going to sing and dance afterwards. By this time I was so panicky that I had to rush to get my lift outside. Apparently it was amazing and they ended the night in joy.
I would just like to thank all the Jews for the love and support to us gentiles. It might have been something new for some of you, but thank you for trusting us in your synagogue. You painted a picture of who Yeshua is. We love you, we love Israel! Thank you to all the Christians and Christian zionists that supported. Thank you for coming and representing the church. So many organisations and communities were represented in the house. Thank you to all the amazing artists and musicians who had blessed our hearts with the gifts from above.
Thank you Liz, Jamie and Erez! You guys are amazing.
Shalom.
